Commonly referred to as the heart of Napa Valley, Calistoga offers world-class wine tastings at a variety of different wineries. From powerhouse wineries to boutique small producers and family-owned estates, Calistoga wine tastings showcase the terroir and wine making technique that has caused such a buzz. Use this guide to craft your Calistoga  wine tasting tour during your next trip to Napa Valley.
Tucked away at the north end of Napa Valley, just outside of Sonoma County, you’ll find the tranquil and relaxing town of Calistoga. Known for mud baths and mineral water, Calistoga is also home to an impressive collection of wineries. If you’re visiting Calistoga for your first time then you’re in for a treat, because it produces some of the region’s most complex wines.

Canard Vineyards (1016 Dunaweal Ln Calistoga, CA 94515) Canard has been growing grapes for others and making their own bold, easy-drinking wines for almost 30 years. While these coveted bottles are now fully allocated, you can still sign up for their shipments and attend private tastings. They’re also well known for their events, family-style hospitality, outdoor cooking, and nice balance of earthiness and elegance.

Venge Vineyards (4708 Silverado Trl. Calistoga, CA 94515) Venge is hidden just off of the Silverado Trail and winemaker and owner Kirk Venge has become famous for his winemaking abilities and ever-present smile. They’re stable of wines is impressive, and they’re known for their smoky and spicy Syrah, delicately-made but massive Cabernet Sauvignons, juicy red blends, and refreshing whites. Call ahead for an appointment and be sure you plan enough time to relax and enjoy the views from the patio at the vineyard tasting home.

A more personal tasting than most wineries. They sit you at a table and serve you at the table. A new glass for each wine and a thorough explanation of the wine.
More important is that the wines are very nice. You are not rushed and the people (Bradley) are informative and welcoming.

Amici Cellars (3130 Old Lawley Toll Rd Calistoga, CA 94515) Amici Cellars is the perfect compliment to a visit to Jericho Canyon as it’s just a bit further north and has an array of well-made wines at varying prices. Aptly named by the group of good friends that started the winery, Amici is a welcoming, unassuming spot and their small production wines can be found at select locations around the country. The outdoor setting has a spectacular view of the Palisades.

Larkmead Vineyards is situated on the valley floor in a location that isn’t far from Highway 29 and other wineries but somehow feels as though you’re on a vineyard in the middle of nowhere. The tranquil vibes and modern farmhouse architecture find a sweet balance between stylish luxury and homey charm, and the wines here are tasty from the get-go but also worth collecting.

Bennett Lane Winery 3340 CA-128 Calistoga, CA 94515
The staff at Bennett Lane Winery eschew the hard sell because they know their wines speak for themselves. The result is a laid-back, friendly tasting experience featuring some of their 36 90+ point wines from top tasting authorities. $20/person for the tasting.

Chateau Montelena (1429 Tubbs Ln Calistoga, CA 94515)
From the moment you see the massive ivy-covered façade of Chateau Montelena, you know you’re in for a rich and romantic wine tasting experience. Stroll through the Chinese Garden and snap a picture of the sparkling sunlight on Jade Lake. Insider tip: No reservation is needed for Current Release Tastings, but groups larger than ten are encouraged to call ahead. Tasting $25 fee is fairly reasonable, and there’s no hard sell but the fee it can be waived if you spent $100 with respect to purchasing bottles or joining their wine club. The staff at the wine tastings are very knowledgeable not only about Montelena’s wines but also about other wineries as well.

In addition to Montelena’s being famous for having bested French white wines in a 1976 wine judging in Paris, the beautiful Chinese gardens are worth a visit. When I stopped by, there didn’t seem to be any restrictions on who could access the gardens, so they’re a welcome way to entertain designated drivers or non-drinkers in your party, or to walk off the buzz after you’re done tasting. Definitely a recommended destination for anyone seeking to increase their knowledge of California wines.
